April, 10th, 2009, (San Juan, Puerto Rico), In our furious Tec. laiden, iPod connected, video game saturated, info highway, know it all society ask anyone what a Cherokee is and anyone can tell you quick, but ask a U.S Puerto Rican what a Taino is and you may get a dun-know response. Tainos are natives of the Caribbean who live and have always lived in Borinken or U.S, Puerto Rico. The first to greet Columbus in 1493. They are the Original People before the was a New World for Europe to conqour. Words like barbacoa (Barbecue) and Huracan (Hurricane) are Native Taino. Today we Acknowledge them and sing their praise. Now everybody will know them and their contribution.
The song "Taino Love" by Lugo is a tribute to the Taino and this Hit Reggaeton love song by this multi talented Singer Songwriter is fast burning up the charts and radio. "Taino Love" tells the story of a lost sailor landing on a beach and finding his only love. The story is a timeless one of an ancient peaceful people who endure with beauty and come from a proud nobel bloodline. Today The Spanish, the African and Taino bloodlines are each carried on in all Puerto Ricans in a wonderful mix. Lugo says of Puerto Ricans today. "No one bloodline is better than the other. The diversity is what makes us strong. We must honor each of them equally."
Singer and Songwriter Lugo is the nephew of Roberto Clemente and is a philanthropist as well in his own right. He performs music for the troops in Afghanistan and around the world traveling with the Armed Forces Entertainment. Lugo is a fervent proud supporter of Statehood for Puerto Rico for many reasons but the most important being the channel of funds in the form of substantial grants and concessions awarded to the Native American Taino once Statehood is achieved. "Look at Foxwoods and so many other Native American success stories, I see this for Puerto Rico too." He explains. "There are so many things to be thankful to the Taino for. "Taino Love " is my way of saying thank you." Lugo said while on tour promoting his new Album Spiritual Bodega. "It is a fun Album with an easy going relaxing vibe, laid back like the Taino." Lugo is using music to bring awareness to the Taino and to Puerto Rico as a whole. Educating everyone to the history and importance of honoring our ancestors, all well within the confines of popular music, under the guise of a romantic love story and having a good old time. The song includes a sample from the great Cuban Artist Benny More "Corazon Rebelde". The latin Horns blare the riff that is undeniably regal and welcoming at the same time. The beat is undeniably Island cool and intoxicating fun. Music and an unexpected history lesson. "Taino love" by Lugo finally brings to the forefront real music with a message that you can actually dance to and enjoy. No one will say when asked what a Taino is that they dun-know.
